MD MS Admission NRI Quota - Get Direct Admission in MD/MS

MD/MS Admission in India

MBBS graduates in India who want to study further in the medical field can pursue MD or MS programs and become specialists. To be eligible for the MD or MS programs in India, applicants must clear the NEET-PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Postgraduate), a mandatory entrance examination for postgraduate medical courses conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) each year.

Furthermore, the candidate must be permanently or provisionally registered with the NMC or the State Medical Council. They should also have an MBBS degree from an NMC-recognized medical institution and have completed a 1-year mandatory internship. At the end, through the NEET-PG counselling sessions at the Central and State levels, applicants are allowed admission to MD and MS programs.

NBEMS Eligibility Guidelines As Per 2026 Brochure

MBBS graduates who want to apply for MD and MS programs in India must meet certain eligibility criteria for higher chances of admission by an Indian medical institution. Here are the eligibility criteria for Indian medical graduates to pursue further education in PG courses:

  • Hold an MBBS degree or a provisional MBBS pass certificate as per the rules of the NMC Act, 2019, and the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023.
  • Hold a permanent or provisional registration certificate of the MBBS qualification issued by the NMC or State Medical Council.
  • Have completed one year of internship, or are likely to complete the internship on or before 31st July 2026.

NBEMS (National Board of Examination in Medical Science) guidelines for the eligibility criteria of Indian MBBS graduates to accept MD and MS admissions state the following:

  • Candidates who are found ineligible at any stage of NEET-PG will not be permitted to appear in the examination and/or counselling. If any ineligible candidate appears and/or succeeds in NEET-PG 2026, his/her result/candidature shall be cancelled and/or treated as cancelled.
  • Requests from candidates who complete their internship after 31st July, or who do not possess the required qualifications as per the NMC Act, 2019, and the repealed IMC Act, 1956, will be summarily rejected. Candidates are also advised not to approach for any such relaxation.
  • The internship dates (i.e., date of commencement and completion) declared by the candidates in the application form will be final. At the time of counselling/admission to the allotted medical college/institute, the candidate must produce the original completion certificate of the mandatory 12-month rotating internship.
  • For candidates who have passed their MBBS degree course from medical colleges and completed the mandatory rotatory internship for the year 2026, the cut-off dates for eligibility will be determined by NMC. No recognition shall be given to qualifications from colleges completing after the cut-off date fixed by NMC.
  • Registration with NMC or State Medical Council is mandatory, and the documentary proof of the same must be produced by the candidates on the day of the examination as well as at the time of counselling/admission.
  • Some institutes in India do not allow admission for PG courses with an already running course. Candidates who are already pursuing a PG course through All India Quota or State Quota and are applying again for a seat under these quotas must confirm their eligibility conditions with the respective university. If such candidates are denied admission, NBEMS/MoHFW/Designated Counseling Authority shall not be responsible. Such candidates can opt for a subject and college entirely at their own risk and cost.
  • For admission in Deemed Universities, the definition of NRI shall be as per the order of the Honourable Supreme Court dated 22/08/2017 in WP 689/2017.
  • The eligibility of candidates who are issued admit cards for the examination shall remain purely provisional. Appearance in NEET-PG 2026 does not guarantee any automatic right of admission to MD/MS/PG Diploma courses.

NEET PG Eligibility Criteria - Foreign Nationals

Some students who earned their MBBS degree from a foreign medical university, and who either officially identified as Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), are eligible, but they must meet the eligibility requirements.
